February 14th and my wife is looking at me with hope in her eyes. She has just given me a card and a bottle of my favourite drink so I presume she is hoping for something similar in return. I have nothing but the shovel I’m hiding behind my back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Valentine’s Day is a joke. A day made up, no doubt, by people who sell cards and flowers. A way of conning us out of our money as we feel duty bound to „prove our love“ for one another.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well this collection is not about proving love. This collection of stories is all about sour, bloody violent love. They say love hurts. They’re not wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

In „Valentine’s Slay: It’s A Thin Line Between Love And Hate“ serviert Matt Shaw 10 Kurzgeschichten, die sich nicht immer unbedingt um den Valentinstag, aber immer irgendwie um das Thema Liebe, drehen. Und die kann bekanntlich weh tun, sehr weh, wie in einigen der Storys gezeigt wird.\u00a0<\/span>
\nWer den Autor kennt, wei\u00df, dass man sich niemals sicher sein kann, was einen erwartet, nicht jede Geschichte ist blutig oder brutal, aber b\u00f6se sind sie alle.^^<\/span><\/p>\n

Vor kurzem fiel mir doch tats\u00e4chlich dieses im Februar, p\u00fcnktlich zum Valentinstag, begonnene Buch in die Hand, das irgendwie im B\u00fccherstapel untergegangen ist. Gut, der Tag der Verliebten ist inzwischen lange vorbei und ich hatte auch keine Ahnung mehr, wie weit ich beim ersten Anlauf gekommen bin, also habe ich einfach nochmal von vorne begonnen.<\/span>
\n„Valentine’s Slay“ zeigt dem Leser in 10 Kurzgeschichten so ziemlich alle Gesichter der Liebe und einige davon sind ziemlich fies. Wer schon ein Buch des Autors gelesen hat, ahnt bereits, dass es hier f\u00fcr niemanden ein sch\u00f6ner Tag wird, aber auch der Titel und das von N\u00e4geln durchbohrte Herz auf dem Cover lassen das ja bereits vermuten.<\/span>
\nAber mal ehrlich, Valentinstag, wer braucht den schon? Seine Liebe zeigt man sich t\u00e4glich, oder eben auch nicht.^^ Das Matt es mit diesem Tag der Liebe ebenfalls nicht so hat, l\u00e4sst bereits sein Vorwort vermuten, au\u00dferdem gibt es auch zwischendurch immer mal wieder eine kurze Erkl\u00e4rung, wie es zu dieser oder jenen Story kam, ich pers\u00f6nlich liebe so etwas ja, so kann ich mich gleich viel besser ins Geschehen hineinversetzen. Das k\u00f6nnte hier allerdings schmerzhaft werden, also Vorsicht. W\u00e4hrend mir bei meinem Einstieg mit „Love Hurts“ recht schnell klar war, wie der Hase l\u00e4uft, \u00fcberraschen andere Kurzgeschichten, egal ob es in ihnen um einen geheimnisvollen Liebesbrief, ein Abendessen in einem japanischen Restaurant, einen nicht ganz so flotten Dreier oder einen armen Engel geht.<\/span>
\nIch habe mir vorgenommen, mehr B\u00fccher im Original zu lesen, mit Stephen King und Chris Carter hatte ich keine Probleme und auch Matt Shaw kann sich da mit einreihen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wer genau so eine Valentinstags-Verweigerer ist wie ich, f\u00fcr den ist „Valentine’s Slay“ ein gefundenes Fressen, allerdings gibt es das Buch (noch) nicht auf Deutsch, Englischkenntnisse sollten also schon vorhanden sein. Ich fand es angenehm zu lesen und leicht zu verstehen, also keine falsche Scheu und hey, man kann bei Matt immer tolle Schimpfworte lernen.^^<\/span>
\nNat\u00fcrlich ist das Werk keine anspruchsvolle Literatur, aber ich habe genau das bekommen, was ich erwartet habe, daf\u00fcr vergebe ich 4 von 5 Miezekatzen.<\/span><\/p>\n
