Nach „Jackknife“, „Letterslot“ und „Night and Day in Misery“ war mit „The Blanks“ Kurzgeschichte Nummer 4 aus der von Amazon herausgegebenen „The Shivers“ Reihe f\u00e4llig. Nur auf „The Indigo Room“ von Stephen Graham Jones habe ich verzichtet, weil ich mit dem Schreibstil des Autors einfach nicht klar komme. F\u00fcr alle diese B\u00fccher gibt es keine \u00dcbersetzung, sie sind also im Original, also auf Englisch zu haben.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wie jeden Sommer in den letzten Jahren zieht es Protagonistin Rachel, die ihre Erlebnisse in der Ich-Perspektive erz\u00e4hlt, und ihre Familie auch diesmal wieder in ihr Haus auf Jeckle Island. Die Insel ist ein Geheimtipp im nahen New York, nur selten stehen dort Anwesen zum Verkauf und will man eines erwerben, braucht man Empfehlungen. So hat sich eine kleine, eingespielte Gemeinschaft gebildet, die weitab vom Gro\u00dfstadtstress entspannte Sommertage verlebt.
\nEs gibt jedoch eine Regel, an die sich alle halten m\u00fcssen, denn drau\u00dfen existiert eine Bedrohung, Wesen, die schlicht und ergreifend „Die Leere“ genannt werden. Sieht man sie, muss man sie ignorieren, einfach so tun, als w\u00e4re nichts gewesen und alles ist gut. Doch Rachels Sohn Callum sieht nicht weg und so nimmt das Ungl\u00fcck seinen Lauf.
\nGrady Hendrix geht in seiner Kurzgeschichte so gut wie gar nicht auf jene Monster ein, die zu Jeckle Island geh\u00f6ren, sie sind einfach da. Worum genau es sich bei ihnen handelt, dar\u00fcber l\u00e4sst er seine Leser im Unklaren und das ist verdammt clever, denn so kann sich jeder ein ganz eigenes Bild machen. Stattdessen beschreibt er, wie Callums Familie zu ihrem Haus kommt, wie man mit den anderen „Bewohnern“ umgeht und auch, dass es schon vorher zu Vorkommnissen kam, \u00fcber die aber nicht geredet wird.
\n<\/span>„The Blanks“ ist eine wunderbare Metapher daf\u00fcr, was passiert wenn wir der Realit\u00e4t nicht ins Auge blicken k\u00f6nnen oder wollen. Wir sind ge\u00fcbt darin, \u00fcber gewisse Dinge einfach hinwegzusehen, selbst wenn sie uns direkt betreffen. Kommt es aber dazu, wird selbst der Familenurlaub im beschaulichen Ferienhaus schnell zum Albtraum. Es wird nicht blutig oder brutal, der Horror hier kommt schleichend, leise und genau das macht betroffen und regt zum Nachdenken an.

„The Blanks“ ist eine kurze, aber daf\u00fcr sehr intensive und herzergreifende Story, mit der uns Grady Hendrix einen Spiegel vorh\u00e4lt. Den wenigsten wird gefallen, was sie darin sehen, denn es ist unangenehm, ja schmerzhaft und mir gerade deshalb 4 von 5 Miezekatzen wert<\/span><\/p>\n
